The Differences of Bowls
Victoria Updike
Ceramics 1
Class of 2025
For this show, I created a variety of bowls. All different shapes, sizes and colors and differences of depths, thicknesses, and even wideness. Specifically dipped glazed techniques to emphasize the quality of the piece. I created these bowls by throwing on the wheel. There are multiple reasons why I wanted to create these bowls. One purpose was for my home, for salad bowls to soup bowls to even a dog bowl. I wanted to keep them basic yet unique. I like to cook at home so I thought these bowls would be really neat to use. Another reason was just to stretch my capabilities and see what I can create. When we first started to learn to throw, we learned to throw many things, throughout all of them, I thought my weakness was throwing bowls. So I really wanted to work on it and push myself to see if I can improve. So I thought bowls would yet push myself, I can improvise and create a variety of bowls to see where my strengths are. I am super excited about this show and it really shows the uniqueness of something that seems basic. Something that I would like you all to take away from this piece is that never judge a book by its cover because yet it seems like a boring old bowl you see everyday, it has many uses and can be more than it seems. While you see the end product, you do not see the struggles everyday of trying to fix my technique, such as moving my elbow from up into the air to my stomach so I can center better. Another thing was being able to see the entire process of having to redo bowls, to the process of drying to perfection (which was probably the hardest part), to glazing and sanding everything. I put a lot of hard work into this body of work and I hope y'all like it.
